Antique Empty Oak Cutlery Chest Canteen With Royal Letters Patent Interior (#59949)

Our Reference #: 59949

A very nice canteen with an unusual Royal Letters patented spring action retainer slats for the 2 sets of 6 knives (you push down the slats to remove/replace the knives and they spring back into place). Has slots for a 5 piece carving set ( 2 forks fit to the lid either side of the knives) and slots for 12 dinner/side forks, 6 dessert spoons and 6 teaspoons as well as 2 larger sauce ladles. This accommodates very large dinner knives - they need to be 25-26cm long, and the side knives c. 21cm. Forks c. 20cm and 16cm. The lid has an engraved brass plaque 'Presented to Mr F.A. Doughty by his colleagues of the L.C.C Tramways dept on the occasion of his marriage 4th Nov 1911'. LCC in this instance is almost certainly Leicester City Council.

Condition: Overall structurally fine with a cosmetic slight shrinkage crack across the centre of the lid & some surface scratches etc but aged and well patinated. The interior is overall very nice with some baise scuffs and all the spring restrainers still in perfect working order. Underside has been freshly re-baised. No key.
